When Should We Moralize About Music?

On, Tyler, The Creator’s new album:
“Of the 35 reviews accessible on Metacritic, less than 32% (11) of them even bring up the use of the word “faggot”, and of the 11 that do, one calls it “shameful” to let morals color your perception of the album, another says you can’t hear the brilliance of Golblin until “the language barrier is crossed and ears become numb,” and finally one just bluntly says, “who really cares about the relationship between his lyrics and our values?””
Is this being too much like Tipper Gore, too puritanical and self-righteous? Are those minority of critics who take issue with the word “faggot” not properly decoding the word “faggot”?

“Kim comes off all cool and badass, but she’s really sweet and gentle and feminine,” longtime friend Sofia Coppola says, praising Gordon’s ability to draw power from vulnerability.

“When you’re in a group, you’re always sharing everything. It’s protected,” she says of being in Sonic Youth. “Your own ego is not there for criticism, but you also never quite feel the full power of its glory, either.” She’s done with that for now. “A few years ago I started to feel like I owed it to myself to really focus on doing art.”

Why Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” Video Makes Me Uncomfortable… and Kind of Makes Me Angry

jazzylittledrops:

So this video started going around my facebook today, with about a dozen of my female friends sharing the link with comments like, and “Everyone needs to see this”, and “All girls should watch this,” and “This made me cry.” And I’m not trying to shame those girls! I definitely understand why they would do so. And I don’t want to be a killjoy. But as I clicked the link and started watching the video, I started to feel a slight sense of discomfort. I couldn’t put my finger on why that was, exactly, but it continued throughout the whole thing. After watching the video several more times, I have some thoughts…

So many excellent thoughts here. Questioning beauty as a societal construct is critical in dismantling the patriarchy. The irony is rich: They are tricking us into being ashamed of our bodies, profiting off of it, and then using those profits to make commercials about how we are all fools for believing what they have taught us.
